Pop Warner recently added stricter rules to help prevent and treat concussions among young athletes. The youth football, cheer and dance organization has officially banned kick-offs and adopted the “when in doubt, sit them out" rule.
We know from research using PET and MRI scans that there are potential long-term effects of concussions on the brain. That’s why these initiatives are critical. However, further imaging research is needed to better understand the impact of concussions on brain development in young athletes. With this knowledge, we can continue to make our favorite pastimes safer.
